BASIC TRAFFIC ANALYSIS

Pengertian basic traffic analysis:

Code Red II - 2001

Mulai Beredar, Code Red II yang Lebih Agresif
TechInfo Thu, 09 Aug 2001 08:50:00 WIB

(**/idgns)

Lesson From History Morris Worm - 1988

There may be a virus loose on the internet.
Andy Sudduth of Harvard, 34 minutes after midnight, Nov. 3, 1988

The above may be the computer understatement of the year. As of the time that Sudduth posted his message, the internet was coming apart. VAX and Sun machines across the country were being overloaded by invisible tasks, preventing users from being able to use the machines effectively, if at all, and eventually forcing system administrators to cut off many of their machines from the internet entirely in an attempt to cut off the source of infection. The culprit of all this chaos is a small (99 line, not including object files) program written by Robert Tappan Morris who was, at the time, a 23 year old doctoral student at Cornell University. This code, or this type of code, has since been given then name, worm. There has been a great deal of discussion as to whether or not the name "worm" is appropriate. Many still refer to the program which paralyzed the internet in late 1988 as a virus. However, there is a major difference between the average viral program, and the program in question, and for this reason, we will use the term "worm" to describe programs of the type in question, capitalizing when describing the specific Internet Worm launched in November of 1988.
The primary difference between worms and other illicit computer programs (often referred to as viruses) is the method of operation the programs use in order to reproduce and spread. When a standard computer virus enters a computer (almost always via an infected disk) it alters a system file, or some other convenient file which is likely to be used sometime in the near future. The alteration to this file usually is the addition of commands that will activate the virus wherever it is on the computer. The virus will then perform its nefarious deeds. The first major distinction here, at least in comparison with worms, is that, until the user (inadvertently) activates the virus, the virus is dormant on the computer. Moreover, until the altered file is called, the virus is unable to do any activity. The second distinction here is that a virus needs to be carried from one computer to another via shared diskettes. If the owner of a computer is careful to use only disks that they know are safe, the chance of viral infection is virtually nil.
A worm, on the other hand, is far more powerful. When a worm gains access to a computer (usually by breaking into it over the internet) it launches a program which searches for other internet locations, infecting them if it can. At no time does the worm need user assistance (accidental or not) in order to operate its programming. Moreover, the worm travels over the internet, so all machines attached to an infected machine are at risk of attack. Considering the connectivity of the internet on the whole, this includes a huge number computers whose only defense is the sealing of the security gaps which the worm uses to enter. Secondly, worms can spread with no assistance (as opposed to viruses which must literally be carried from one machine to another). Once the worm discovers an internet connection, all that it must do is download a copy of itself to that location, and continue running as normal.
Now it has been 7 years since the Worm was defeated, but it is still worth looking at what happened, both in terms of how the program operated, and as to what conditions allowed it to do what it did. With that in mind, there are a number of subtopics of interest.

The history of worm like programs

The history of worm like programs

The 1988 Internet worm was not the first program of its type, nor (alas) was it the last. Here is a brief description of other historical worms. The term "worm" actually comes from a science fiction story called The Shockwave Rider written by John Brunner in 1975. In short, the story is about a totalitarian government that controls its citizens through a powerful computer network. A freedom fighter infests this network with a program called a "tapeworm" forcing the government to shut down the network, thereby destroy its base of power.
Between this and the 1988 worm, it is small wonder that worm programs are getting a bad name. However, the first worm programs were actually designed to facilitate better usage of a network.
The first program that could reasonably called a worm was written in 1971 by Bob Thomas. This program was in response to the needs of air traffic controllers and would help to notify operators of when control of a certain airplane moved from one computer to another. In actuality, the program, called "creeper" only traveled from screen to screen in the network displaying the message "I'm creeper! Catch me if you can!" The creeper program did NOT reproduce itself.
After this, several other programmers tried their hands at similar programs, but the idea gradually died out in a couple of months.
In the early 1980's, John Shock and Jon Hepps of Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center began experimenting with worm programs. (This was the first time that the term worm was actually applied to this sort of code.) The developed 5 worms, each of which were designed to preform helpful tasks around the network. Some worms were quite simple, such as the town crier worm, which simply traveled throughout the network posting announcements. Other worms were quite clever and complex, such as the "vampire" worm. This worm was idle during the day, but at night, it would take advantage of the largely idle computers and apply them to complex tasks which needed the extra processing power. At dawn, it would save the work it had done so far, and then become idle, waiting for the next evening.
However, although these programs were inherently useful, it became apparent that worm could be dangerous tools if incorrectly used. This was demonstrated amply when one of Xerox's worms malfunctioned during the night. When people arrived at work the next day, they found that computers throughout the research center had crashed. Moreover, when they tried to restart the machines, the malfunctioning worm immediately crashed them again. A "vaccine" had to be written to prevent the worm from crashing the systems.
At that point, worm research (for some odd reason) died out of the public spotlight until it was violently thrust back into it by Morris in November of 1988. Morris's worm received vast amount of media attention, becoming front page news for over a week after the occurrence. (Which is pretty impressive for a computer program when Presidential elections are going on.) The media jumped on the story of the program that had single handedly crashed the Internet, to the point of hampering attempts by the MIT and Berkeley teams to decompile the captured worm program. However, this media coverage was mortally wounded when reporters found out that there was nothing visual to describe to the general viewing audience. the story ended up being more a coverage of the attempts to defeat the worm, and the consequences the worm would have on the Internet community, not to mention Robert Morris.
No worm yet devised have been able to follow Morris's in terms of shock value. However, this is not to say that there are not still worms out there. In late 1989, a CERT (Computer Emergency Response Team) advisory was posted for a worm entitled WANK. Like the Internet worm, it takes advantage of bugs and security holes to travel from network to network. Unlike Morris's worm, the program is malicious and designed to be destructive.
  • It attempts to gain system privileges. If it succeeds:
    • It turns off mail to the SYSTEM accounts,
    • It alters the system login command to make it APPEAR that all a user's file has been deleted
    • It alters the announcement message to display a message of its own choosing.
Even if it fails to infect a system account:
  • It transmits its location (thus indicating that the system it is on has a security hole)
  • It harasses users by using the PHONE function to ring them
  • It records user passwords that are found to be simple, such as the null string and the user's username.
Since this time, CERT, to my knowledge, has not posted additional worm warnings, however, no one claims that all the security holes that worms can take advantage of have been closed off.
